March 23 Birthdays

Bill Dellinger, United States, middle-distance runner. In 1959 William Dellinger set world records in the indoor two-mile (8:49.9) and indoor three-mile (13:37.0). He was a three-time Olympian, making the United States Olympic team in 1956 (Melbourne), 1960 (Rome), and 1964 (Tokyo); in the Tokyo games he won the bronze medal in the 5,000m, running 13:49.8 in a race won by fellow-American Bob Schul. Dellinger returned to his alma mater, the University of Oregon, first as an assistant coach under the great Bill Bowerman and then as head track-and-field coach after Bowerman's retirement in 1972.
