March 22 Birthdays

1878
Michel Johann Théato, Luxembourg long-distance runner. Competing for France, Théato won the 1900 Olympic marathon in Paris, covering the 40.26 km course in 2:59:45.

1970
Hwang Young-cho, South Korea, long-distance runner. Hwang's second marathon and first international competition was at the 1991 (Sheffield) World University Games, where he won in a time of 2:12:40. Back in Korea he ran a fine 2:08:47 at Beppu, earning him a berth on the South Korean Olympic team. He won the gold medal in the 1992 (Barcelona) Olympic Games marathon, clocking 2:13:23. He was fourth in the 1994 Boston Marathon where he ran his career-best time of 2:08:09. Hwang failed to make his country's Olympic team in 1996 and subsequently retired from athletics.
