October 7 Birthdays

1946
Valeria Bufanu, Romania, hurdler. At the 1972 (Munich) Olympic Games, the distance of the women's hurdle event was increased from 80m to 100m for the first time. Valeria Bufanu was ready, and ran 12.84 to win the silver medal, finishing behind East Germany's Annelie Ehrhardt (12.59).

1974
Sanderlei Parrela, Brazil, sprinter. Sanderlei Claro Parrela won a silver medal in the men's 400m at the 1999 (Seville) World Championships, clocking 44.29 behind Michael Johnson's world record winning time of 43.18. Parrela also finished fourth in the men's 400m at the 2000 (Sydney) Olympic Games, running 45.01.
